Search
and Rescue
The
lost, injured, or those needing a rescue in Santa Cruz County count
on the professional all volunteer Search and Rescue (SAR) team
who believe that response to persons in distress is an honorable
tradition. The professionals on the SAR
team come from all walks of life and from across the community
to carry on the tradition of helping others by dedicating time,
information, skills, equipment and funding to the relief of suffering.
The Sheriff’s Department coordinates communication among
federal, state, local, and volunteer groups to provide an integrated
emergency response, rescue and recovery system.
The SAR team
includes four phases of operational capacity; Readiness,
Response, Operations, and Recovery.
Belonging
to the SAR Team means being physically active. Team members
ride horses, camp, endure temperature and other weather extremes,
hike, climb up cliffs and down caves, participate in rope rescues,
as well as urban search and rescue. They are also technically
astute using global
positioning systems (GPS), various computer programs, and
distance learning.
The SAR Team
also uses a variety of vehicles so if driving an ATV, duce
and a half, or other exotic means of transportation, the team
may want to talk to you.
When activated,
resources from within the Sheriff’s Department such as
the Canine teams may be activated. The handler/dog
teams transform into search and rescue teams.
The SAR Team
has several duties.
